In May 2017, a team of the Fraunhofer Institute for High-Speed Dynamics (Ernst-Mach-Institut, EMI) has performed a comprehensive experimental series within the scope of the further development of X-ray inspection of high-speed deformation processes during crash tests.

For the first time, the internal structures of a vehicle are rendered visible during crash thanks to the new technology for X-ray car crash (X-CC), by combining X-ray technology with the high-dynamic deformation processes under crash conditions. This enables to understand how inner structures of a vehicle, behave during crash. On the basis of these gained insights, materials and numerical models can be optimized.

The team of Dr. Malte Kurfiß gathered important information about the efficiency and the chronological processes during the operation of their high-speed X-ray detector, especially developed by EMI for crash tests, together with the pulsed high-energy X-ray radiation of our 9 MeV linear accelerator.

An important milestone for the development of a time-resolved X-ray inspection system for crash tests, suitable for industrial use was thereby achieved.
